Change the login/welcome screen, Topic January 11, 2009

Otherwise knows as the welcome screen, is what you see after your computer boots up. It lists all of the computers accounts an if they’re password protected asks you for verification.
Note: This guide is for Windows Xp/2000 Users Only
First go to the following site, and download one of the Logon screens you like.

http://www.wincustomize.com/Skins.aspx?LibID=26&u=0

Extract the files, to your hard drive. But extract them to a folder called Logonscreens. No spaces.

Now once you have the screen you like, follow the below instructions very carefully.
Select the start button and type regedit, this will open up your systems registry editor.

Expand
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE –> SOFTWARE –> Microsoft –> Windows NT –> CurrentVersion –> Winlogon

You will see several different values, but for right now only find UIHost
The UIHost property specifies where the system looks for the logon screen. Right-Click UIHost and select Modify

Now just type in the full path to the file you downloaded. It should look something like this. C:/program files/Logonscreens/logonuiX.exe
Or something like that.

Now, Hold the start key you know the one with the windows logo on it. Then press L once. This should take you directly to the welcome screen. If you get an error saying this computer has been locked and can only be opened by the administrator. Then you typed the incorrect path to your logon screen. Get the administrator password, get back on and correct your mistake of entering a bad file path.

If you’ve done this right, good job you’ve just learned a bit of resource hacking.
If you experience major problems go back to tha area of registry and change the UIHost property to say logonui.exe that will set the screen back to its default.

Just something I wrote for my site, and told some folks here I would post when I was done. I hope it will help some of you. PAPAKID, I also used your little part and gave you credit. I hope you do not mind.

Before I start, I want to give this warning on what you can do to your computer. Messing with the registry can be bad. I know this firsthand. I made mistakes that prevented my system from starting, by trying to change the letters on the start key! I was able to fix it pretty easy by forcing my pc to start since I knew how. You may not be that lucky if you mess it up. So please do not tamper with anything you do not know about in the registry. This is a self-extracting file that should be safe even for the inexperienced, just trying to keep everyone safe.

“(from another site) * These files are provided without warranty. Use them at your own risk!!
* These files will overwrite any keyboard mappings you currently have.
* .REG files update your Windows registry. Incorrect changes to the registry may damage Windows or other installed software. Be sure you know what a given .REG file contains before merging it into the registry.”
“And this can mess up your system, so please follow all directions as they are and you should be safe.

You can’t disable both the Windows keys or the Caps locks keys at the same time.
It will reset the setting back to normal and won’t work. Only one at a time. Sorry!

How to disable the Caps Locks key or make it work as another key.

The Caps Locks key.

If you have ever done any extensive typing, you may have been surprised to discover that half of your paragraph is in CAPS when it shouldn’t be. Then you have to turn around and delete it and re-write it all! To some people, this has made them angry enough to want to grab a tool and remove the CAPS LOCKS key from their keyboard!

There is an easier and better way to do this without making holes in your keyboard. I will now give you a couple of ways to disable the key. One way prevents the key from working and the other makes it work as another key like “shift” or “num lock”. There is also one way if you still want the key to work as it is to make it beep when pressed. This way you know when you hit it and can stop before it’s too late. There are many ways around this problem. You get to choose what’s best for you!

Disable CAPS LOCKS entirely.

Compatibility.

This method of disabling the Windows key works with the following:

* Windows XP – Works with Pro or Home.
* Windows 2000 – Confirmed working on SP3 and greater. Should work for others.
* Windows NT – Does not work. Confirmed.
* Windows 95, 98, Me – Should not work. Untested

To disable the CAPS LOCKS key, I have found this registry edit will do the trick. I used the registry code I found and made it to where when you click it. It will auto-add it to your registry. This will make it simple for you. I hosted it on a file host. You can download it by clicking the link.

Restore Caps Locks(removes registry edit)

Make CAPS LOCKS, NUM LOCK, or SCROLL LOCK beep when pressed. [by Papakid at Bleepingcomputer]

Tips for the Fumble Fingered.

Ever get into a furious typing session only to discover that you’ve typed half a paragraph in all caps? Your pinkie finger has betrayed you? There is a way to help prevent that. Make Windows play a sound when the Caps Lock key is pressed.

Here’s how:

1. Open your PC’s Control Panel and then Accessibility Options (In XP use Classic View).

2. On the Keyboard tab , click the Use Toggle Keys checkbox.

3. Click OK.

Now you’ll hear a sound when you use Caps Lock and also Num Lock and Scroll Lock.

If you’re a bit hard of hearing or need a visual warning for some other reason, try this:

1. Repeat step one above.

2. In the Sound tab ckick to check the Use SoundSentry checkbox.

3. Click the Settings button and select Flash active window in the Warning for windowed programs drop-down menu.

4. Click OK and you’re done.

Now every time you hit Caps Lock or the other Lock keys, the currently active window will flash at you.

Disable the Windows key (you can’t disable the Caps Locks key and Windows key too, because it will reset the settings.)

Untested

To disable the Windows Key(s), download and install one of these files.

Disable both Windows Keys

Disable Left Windows Key

Disable Right Windows Key

Restore Windows Key(s)(removes registry edit)

Restart your computer for the settings to take place.

Conclusion:

I hope you have found this Tutorial very informative. I hope it will help you out with that pesky CAPS LOCKS key! I know it did with mine. I’m sorry to those whose systems that it will not work on. All I can say for you is to get a screwdriver and pluck it off. Or make it beep when pressed. If you have any questions, just ask in the forums or PM me.

I just found out the XP has a built in function to make fonts look clearer by filling in the gaps between pixels of text characters. It will make Web pages and documents look better.

ClearType is turned off by default because it will not work on older computers, but works fine on newer computers.

You turn ClearType on Control Panel>Display> click on Appearance tab> Effects button> option “use the following method to smooth edges of screen fonts”> select “ClearType”> OK

Ok so far I’ve only tested this on Windows XPro, and here is my little trick to access quick folders.

Ok if your like me you probably have a download folder which mine is located at C:\documents and settings\yanowhiz\extract\ and a long time ago I found out any folder you have in the folder C:\documents and settings\username\ if you goto the Run Command and type in the folder found in the folder in the username folder it will load it. But first you have to be logged into the account where the folder is.

So basically on my name when I wanna access my download folder C:\documents and settings\extract\ I just have to goto Start > Run and type in Extract and it will load that folder.

Having problems accesing Gmail where ever they have filter blocking gmail?

Just type this in your browser:

https://gmail.google.com/gmail/

For some reason the filters only block the URL without the S, which gives it a secure connection and the filters don’t block “secured sites.”

Custom Toolbars, Toolbars everywhere January 10, 2009

First things first, give yourself some room to make toolbars, if you dont want them on your taskbar

1. A good place to put a toolbar would be at the top of the screen, just drag your My Computer Icon to the top of the screen, or the side. Or Wherever, this can be done with any folder if you want. Only in the windows NT verisons (2k, XP, 2003 etc, and i think
ME)

2. Next, make a folder somewhere on your harddrive, call it toolbars or something. Then, make folders inside that folder for each toolbar you want. Then make  shortcuts to some programs, or folders. Or you can skip this step if you want to  have a toolbar of a folder you use for downloading or saving stuff. For alot of you  this would mean My Documents.

3. Right Click on your taskbar, or a newly created toolbar (such as my computer),  then hover over Toolbars, Click on New Toolbar.

4. Browse to wherever you want, I reccomend resizing this so that only the title of
the toolbar is displayed, so that way it becomes a drop down, like your start
menu.

5. If you have a my computer toolbar, you may want to right click on it, and
uncheck show text. Then hover over view, and select small icons.

Secure Your Computer!, Completely Eliminate Unwanted Access January 10, 2009

This is a great security precaution to take.

Ok well if someone ever wanted to gain access to your computer, say a computer savvy friend or someone was trying to steal some personal info, they could pop in a bootable linux disk and bypass the windows security logon and open a password cracking program and navigate to the file where your passwords are stored. they then could crack your logon password and then access your system and take what they wanted and left and you wouldve never known they were there. What this handy registry key does, is it uses a special type of encryption ultimately superior to the default encryption that is built into Windows XP, so if indeed someone popped in a bootable linux disk and opened your password file…not only would it take an extremely extremely longer amount of time but the chance of success of the crack working is greatly reduced. So to apply this precaution:

1. Click Start, click Run, type regedit, and then click OK.
2. Locate and then click the following key in the registry:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Lsa
3. On the Edit menu, point to New, and then click DWORD Value.
4. Type NoLMHash, and then press ENTER.
5. On the Edit menu, click Modify.
6. Type 1, and then click OK.
7. Restart your computer, and then change your password

Your now almost completely secure from your password being cracked.

To even prevent someone from popping in a bootable linux disk, you could set a bios password. A bios password is a password that is asked to be entered even before the operating system begins loading. So even if the theif could get a linux disc in there, they would need to know the password…or pull the bios battery from the motherboard and reattach it…..but with the time that takes they could just take the hard drive and leave.

To apply a bios password, restart your computer and hit f2 until the bios menu pops up…..use the arrow keys to navigate to the field called system security or something likewise. navigate to the field that says system password, press enter then enter the password you want and then the confirmation. press enter again to go back to the main bios menu, and then press escape and the press save changes and exit. You will now reboot, and every time the computer reboots it will ask you for this password.

You are now every bit more secure.
